Ipecac is a emetic i,e it induces vomiting and is derived from root of plant ipecachuana.
You must have seen him drink some medicine made of the same plant not the actual emetic.
There's homeopathic medicine too called ipicac derived from same plant by contrast it reduces vomiting tendency

Ipicac is for poison-treatment like if your kid went through a thousand Flinstones chewables. (iron poisoning) makes you puke like crazy.
