I think that ghosts are anyone who either wants to be here or who had unfinished business or who died violently. I don't know that they are stuck here until the end of the earth (which in my opinion will never come, the earth is made of matter and it has mass and energy, therefore it will only change shape and types of energy and never really die), but I believe they will stay till they want to go.

Well As stated by you there are evil spirits on earth and they do trouble people selectively. But there are people who their power of prayers are able to drive these spirits away.I have seen the violent actions of the spirits and how they are subdued.
I dont know about what others opine but it is no effect on me.
