You can do this at the US Copyright Office – see links in the source box. The application is fairly simple & the cost is $30 per application (it will likely rise to $45 by July 1).

Simply adding the copyright symbol on a design makes the painting yours and gives you all rights to it. But if you do not register your copyright, you have no legal recourse if someone infringes upon your copyright (uses the design without your permission). In the US, most public libraries carry copyright forms, & it's just a matter of filling them out and sending them in (there is a small fee). Or, you may hire a firm to copyright your design for you. This is the firm I use.

By u.s. of A. law your work is automatically copyrighted if you paint a painting. To announce that it is copyrighted sign it and put the mark c inside of an o in front of your name, that is all you need to do. the other option is to record the paintings with the copyrights office, you can check their fees and procedures on the net.
