Dry food can be left out for a cat all the time, cats do not overeat, and will eat what they need as needed.
They should have access to food at all times.

I work for a cat vet and what is suggesed by the vet is to leave a good quality dry food down 24/7 as cats prefer to eat a few bites off and on around the clock. A small amount of canned food offered in the morning and in the evening adds moisture to the diet and gives the cat something to look forward to. Give only a quarter can or so. If it's not eaten in one sitting, pick it up and throw it away.
Be sure there is always a bowl of fresh water nearby.
Add playtime (excercise) and lovie time and you should have a happy kitty.

My cat is fed on a daily basis with a mixture of tinned and dried food. I also give her some water mixed in with her food as she does not like milk or water on it's own. She is 10 1/2 years old now and she still looks like she is 6 months old. She cleans herself very regularly and suffers from no ill health. Although she meows sometimes and leaves the dried food in her bowl I won't feed her again until it's all eaten as she needs the combination.

I always leave just enough to cover the bottom of the bowl (dry food). My cat is an inside/outside cat and he does hunt. He's not fat or to skinny so, this works for him. I would suggest leaving enough dry food to just cover the bottom of her bowl and check it periodically during the day to make sure she has food. You can feed her wet food but not to much or to often. Someone already said they feed their cat wet food two to three times a week. That's probably good for the digestive track. If you don't feel satisfied with your answers here, you can always call the vet's office and the nurse should be able to tell you what they recommend over the phone.

Some others said it. I figured I would go ahead and post my agreement to strengthen the argument. Cats don't like to eat at scheduled times. They are snackers, and would prefer to have open access to their food so they can choose when to eat. My cats have open access and they are not fat. Actually the vet said they look incredibly healthy! I had a friend who fed her cats periodically and one of them gained a lot of weight, so I don't think that regulating their food will help anything. Of course, if you see that she is getting fat, you may need to change her food brand or ask your vet. You didn't mention other cats, but just in case, sometimes cats can get territorial about their food in multiple pet houses. In that case, separate feeding times may be necessary just to ensure no one goes hungry. Hope everything works out for you!

On demand! Or that's what your cat would like...
Seriously, though, cats tend to eat little and often, so make sure that there is always food down for them. They will rarely overeat, so don't worry about your cat getting fat. I tend to feed mine twice a day with wet food, and there is always dry food down in case he runs out of wet. And then there are treats for when he's been good, and come when called, that sort of thing.

What I do is leave a bowl out with some food in it. Not filled to the top maybe two little scoops. That way when my two cats get hungry they can have some. Cats nibble they don't gorge themselves like dogs do.

Hi I always leave dry food down for my cat and feed her meat about 3 - 4 times a day (pouches of wiskers) and sometimes she has treats inbetween. If you read the back of any cat food it tells you how often you should feed your cat.
My cat is not fat and excersise loads bless her,

Glad you asked this question, I give my cat meat twice a day once in the morning and then again at night. She has dry food left out for her all day so she can eat when she likes. Its like us some days we eat more than others and we like to snack now and then. Try that as she how she goes. Good luck
