if you financed the car, the borrower will make you get insurance to protect their interests.. if you bought the car for cash, you should get both liability, collision, and uninsured/under-insured motorist coverage to protect yourself and others-- in most states, having liability insurance is a state law, failure to have it will get you a ticket, a big fine, and the possible impounding of your car !! the city in Texas i live in, just passed a rule that anyone driving with out insurance on their car, will have their car impounded by police on the spot.. for your own security , and to stay out of trouble, it would be a good idea to get insurance on your car ASAP !! I am a retired CPA, CFP, & LUTCF..

Yes you need insurance, it's a law first of all. What if you ran into someone? You would get a big fine first off for not having insurance and secondly you probably would face a lawsuit from the person you ran in to. Do you have that kind of money to pay a fine and/or spend time in jail, and do you have the money to buy another person a car?
Get insurance, for your protection.

Is insurance required where you live? Can you afford to replace the car if it's stolen or totalled? What happens if you cause serious damage to someone else in an accident?
If you have answers to all these questions, then you'll know the answer to yours.
