Deblyn is partly right.
If the crossing is used at a stream of 2 way traffic, then traffic in each stream has to take it in turns to use the road. You see this at junctions such as crossroads. The traffic lights are set to change at regular intervals, and pressing the button at one of these junctions is pointless because after both streams of traffic have had a turn, pedestrians get a chance to cross.
But if the crossing is placed in the middle of a long stretch of road, then the button works to make the pedestrian have right of way. And these crossings work quicker if someone on the other side of the road also presses the button.

I liked messing around with the traffic lights when I was younger. I used to press it, but when the cars stopped, no-one would cross the road. Usually got a lot of people angry

It depends. If the traffic light is activated by the presense of another vehicle and a vehicle is there going in your direction, then no. Pressing the button is the activator.

No, they are on timers. once they have changed back to allow traffic then there is a specific time before they will change again. If they haven't been used for some time then the reaction will be quite quick as they only have the short time that is need for the lights to change before you can cross,

Sometimes it does. Some traffic lights are activated by motion sensors these days. If you are the first car and creep ahead a few inches, you might trip the mechanism. It's worth a try and you don't have to get out of the car. I do this at one stoplight in our town and it drives my husband crazy.

No. It only registers once and you still have to wait a week for the lights to change. Then you have to wait another week for the idiots who don't stop.

No, but while your busy pushing the button you're pre-occupied and the wait doesn't feel so long!

No idea. But it feels really good to just ram that button home, don't it?

I think that these buttons can be compared to a placebo. If you think in your mind that it works, then it will work for you, and you only.
