There are some good self help books out there. And if that is not your cup of tea then I would suggest speaking to a counselor, they can usually help in that area. That is not a shrink but someone there more as a life coach, should be in your local phone book.

I used to be like you and when I had an epiphany I was even more so. It is difficult to learn the games people play and the second vocabulary. If you can find a new friend to teach you some communication hand signs and then listen more to conversations it will help you feel you have a right to live. The phrases are fixed and have to be spoken exactly the same way each time to be useful to group combinations. Some find help in churches... some can't even mix there.

Self-confidence which can be developed by total faith in God the Almighty. You are born as a human being endowed with a perfect body denied to many other creatures, armed with perception, senses, mind, intelligence, conscience, empathy and consciousness. Why on earth you should not have self-esteem? Estimate yourself correctly to know your worth. God has gifted you so many virtues all together! Thank Him and be happy. No regrets, please! The fact that you feel low degree of self-esteem is the first sign of humility and God given virtue. Self conceit is the worst enemy of man and not lack of self-esteem. You are a stranger to yourself, try to rediscover yourself.

Get with a friend- someone you trust and respect. Ask this person to list 3 qualities about you that they admire or appreciate.

Accept these qualities as fact, don't diminish them.

Focus on these qualities for 2 weeks, working on improving them, becoming even better at whatever your friend thinks your already good at....

An idea that worked for me- I ended up marrying a man who thinks I'm hot. After a while of him repeating that he thought I was pretty great, I really started believing it...

Another thought- If you're Christian, read the New Testament- it's filled with things Jesus did because he loves you (personally, not just the human race collectively).

"I know I'm somebody, 'cuz God don't make no junk."

Get a hug.

You just need more/better friends. Everyone can use some good friends when they're feeling down. And have someone that you can be totally honest with and bare your soul to, as well as the other way around with them.

It's very rare that you need some pills to fix a chemical imbalance or whatever. You just need a better environment of people to lift you up and for you to help out as well.

Self esteem rises with small victories. It's about taking small steps to reinforce your own vision of self. It isn't an easy task and sometimes seeing a counsellor will help. If left unchecked, it will become standard behaviour.
