As defined by the sage Patanjali, Yoga is ‘Chitta Vriti Nirodhah’, promoting the unison of body and mind and envisages wellness of human beings both physical, mental and spiritual. The eight steps of yoga are yama, niyama, aasana, pranayama, pratyahar, dhyana, dharana and samadhi. Yoga is also said to be a way of life and when practised gives all-round benefits. Meditation is a part of yoga, which deals with mental relaxation and concentration. Here, attention is focused on thoughts and breath. Being aware of breathing automatically controls the thought process and thus relaxes mind completely.

Meditation IS Yoga....
Yoga IS meditation....
It's unfortunate (from earlier answers) that the general concept of "yoga" is taken to be being physical.
The physical part of yoga is 'asana'.
There is also pranayama.
Yoga IS a "science of life".
Hari Om Tat Sat.
God grant me the serenity
to accept what I cannot change,
the courage to change what I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

Yoga is a journey of 8 stages. These stages are Yama - moral codes, Niyama - self-purification and study, Asana - posture, Pranayama - breath control, Pratyahara - sense control, Dharana - concentration, Dhyana - meditation, Samadhi - contemplation.
Therefore, meditation is a stage of Yoga, called "Dhyana".
For more details pick up a good book on "Patanjali Yoga Sutra".

Meditation is turning the mind inward, to one's self. Yoga is a state of perfect spiritual being.

many big differences but the most fundamental is the fact that yoga is predominately an exercise to strengthen the physiology and meditation primarily strengthens the mind/intellect
