A "decent amount" depends upon what you can justify. But it doesn't have to be a life sentence with he bank!
Shop around, get lots of quotes. When looking at venues and catering don't say its for a wedding, a function or party is all the details they need. That W word can increase prices by 40%!!
Look at days other than Saturday's, that can save heaps if you are on a budget. Holding a wedding at a non peak time can save money.
Rather than a fully qualified photographer try a student, they are so creative it is amazing what turns out. Even dresses, find a picture then go to a dress maker. The dress I wanted was 9 grand in the shop, being made to fit for 1300.
You don't need a big cake, Little patty cakes or muffins are great and so much cheaper. Finger food rather than a buffet or even a picnic/BBQ.
Consider a friend or family members garden if you don't want a church, what an honour it is for them and a saving for the happy couple. Even a vacant block in nice surrounding is great, hire a marquee and all he stuff you need and you have a great place.
Call me stingy, but my wedding is less than $3,00 Australian. Most people don't remember what has happened a few years down the track so why all the fuss?

Every time I put the cost together for a wedding I come up with no less then $2,000. Keeping in mind that I have family who will do the pics and videos. I think it's wise to spend a bit more on the things about the wedding that mean more to you both.

I spent 250$ on a used dress. About 5.50 a plate with 100 guest. 100$ on flowers. But I made my own. 50$ on decorations. I also made them. What about 90$ for a rental tux. My husband was a sailor so I didn't have to do that one. 250$ for a DJ. He played for 5 hours. 50$ to rent the hall. 50$ for the precher and church. 50% for the extras at the church. The Cake umm well that can be a lot. My friend made mine for free. Pop and bear was about 200$. Girft for groomsmen and bridemaids was about 60$. I can't think of to much more. We really got lucky and got some breaks. I would say around 3,000-4,000. My wedding wasn't expences yet it was decent. Well it was great for us.

The average American wedding has an average cost of $20,000. I'm budgeting for a $25K wedding and trying to stick to that.
What you need to figure out is what are the most important aspects of the wedding to you and the groom. Is it the dress or the food? Is it really necessary to have a limo or can you use an uncle's classic car to cut costs?

If you do most of it yourself (flowers, decorations, etc..) you can really save. depending on where you have the ceremony and reception, and what time of the year it is......I would expect to spend between $4,500-$5000 at least. Just keep your eyes peeled for great deals. And don't feel obligated to purchase your wedding party's attire either, that can be pretty costly. If they want to be in your wedding, they shouldn't mind paying for their own dress/tux.
May I also suggest fake flowers. They are less expensive and they last forever. I bought mine at Michael's Arts and Crafts and everyone thought they were real!

It depends what you want and how much you can get it for. I work with a lady who paid less than $2,500 for her ENTIRE wedding. My husband and I paid about $8,000 total. Our best friends spent well in excess of $30,000. I wasn't at the first one of these, but I don't feel like my wedding was any less beautiful than our friend's. In fact, I think it was better because of the less "stuffy" reception. It's all in your desires. I think all of us had exactly what we wanted. We just did it in different ways.

What do you consider decent? For some, $150 in Vegas is decent. For others, $50,000 is perfectly fine. You need to decide what you can afford, how you want to allot it, and what's important.
