A few of the things to look for in a really good dog food is for meat to be the first ingredient. Not meal, not corn/corn product. As a matter of fact corn & wheat won't be in a good dog food. Neither will by products. Nasty stuff those by products. B.P. is ANYTHING from an animal that is not fit for human consumption, including cancerouis tissue.

Pedigree, Iams, etc aren't great. The first ingredient should be some kind of meat. Ideally just a meat, like chicken, lamb, beef..'meal' or 'byproduct' can be a little sketchy, but might still be okay.

Corn should be nowhere on the list. Dogs can't digest it and it's a leading cause of food allergies.

Flint River Ranch, Solid Gold, California Natural, Eagle Pack, and several other premium brands are worth looking into.

Prey Model Raw a.d BARF diets are far superior to everything else. And what is a Ratcha? A mutt? A mutt is a mix of 2 or more breeds. Blue is better than some.. but raw is even better. And a lot cheaper. 2 small dogs can be fed a raw diet for $30 a month.

Look for all natural dog foods, ones that DO NOT contain wheat, corn, by-products, beet pulp, salt, or sugar. Ones that contain, whole meats as the first ingredient, pumpkin Omega 6 & 3 fatty acids, cranberries, blueberries, and natural fish oils.
Pedigree is one of the worst foods to feed your dog, if you can buy it at a grocery store then its not good quality.
Some good premium brands are Natural Balance, Solid Gold, Innova and Royal Canin

a fresh diet sucha as raw meat. .u know--food. The stuff wolves and coyotes and jackals eat. They don't sell sacks of kibble in the wild.

The usual image people have of someone who "cooks" for her dog is an infatuated owner of a tiny, spoiled dog, someone used to coaxing their finicky pet to have a little more filet mignon before dessert.

In reality, the number of people who have abandoned "nutrition in a sack" and opted for homemade pet food is huge, and growing. There are books and videos and magazines and catalogues devoted to holistic pet care and the preparation of healthy homemade diets.

Today, even the best intentioned of pet owners can unknowingly find themselves feeding their dogs and cats the toxic residues of factory-farmed, antibiotic-fed, hormone-laced cows and chickens and sheep, mixed with spoiled grains and some rancid oil. Many are also feeding their pets preservatives and sweeteners.

The market is flooded with expensive, "scientifically" formulated pet foods, all supposedly providing 100 percent complete nutrition. Do they?

All processed pet foods--whether sold in cans, bags, or frozen packages, in either giant supermarket chains or local health food stores- are missing something that seems to me to be one of the most important "nutrients" of all. This key ingredient is something nutritional scientists have practically ignored. But when it's there, you and I can know it and feel it. It is a quality found only in freshly grown, uncooked whole foods. It's life energy."
Well, what do I feed my dogs? I feed them a balanced diet of raw meat and bones, and some extras such as raw eggs, a small amount of veggies, raw cheeses, and yogurt. There are many benefits to feeding your pets real food.

You can choose organic produce and meats, and thus support clean and beneficial agricultural practices.
You have the ultimate in quality control.
You can maintain a pet in stunning health, with no body odor or rotting teeth or bad breath. (Did you think wolves had annual teeth cleanings?) I feed my dogs this and they are extremely healthy and no illnesses. I do not have vet bills other than shots and normal checkups. I have a sheltie that is 19 years old in people years not dog years. If this diet was bad would she be still alive? NOOOOOoo she wouldn't. I am a firm believer in the fresh diet.

Pedigree and Purina are great dog foods. Remember not to feed your dog bones, chocolates, sweets, and squid. It's also good to feed your dogs twice a day with enough exercise.

For my two dogs Iams is the best. Eukanuba is more expensive but good also. Prior to feeding them Iams my cocker spaniel's coat was dull and skin was dry. It is now nice and shiny. Also his feces is a darker color and just looks healthier.(Sounds gross but it is true!!)
