Fantastic assignment! Beautiful countryside. Dripping in history. Great food. Fantastic beer. Great people. English isn't widely spoken though it's not that hard to find someone with English skills. Your high-school French is welcomed, unlike in Paris.
If you've enjoyed Germany, you'll love Belgium as well. And it's only a few hours drive to Germany. Fast and easy PCS.
Oh, yeah, and NO STAIRWELLS!!

I'm bemused by your question! Are you saying you've been based in Germany and you haven't seen Europe? No way!
Or have I misunderstood and you're still in the States, you've been posted to Germany but before going you're being transferred to Belgium? I hope its this one.
Europe is a fantastic continent and every bit of it is different to the next. France is completely different to the UK and Germany is a million miles removed from Italy. Belgium and Switzerland could be from different planets and Spain is not even remotely like Sweden!
Its not just the look of the places, but the cultures, the people, the history, the architecture, the food, the languages, the sports, the politics. Europe is staggeringly diverse, but every bit of it is great fun and hugely rewarding to visit.
For heaven's sake, see it all while you're there! Belgium is a good base to travel out to all Europe. From Brussels you can drive through the Eurotunnel and be in the heart of London in 4 hours, or the same time will take you into Switzerland, or to the border of Austria, ot the Czech Republic. Twice that will take you to Spain, into Italy, or Slovakia, or Hungary - even to Russia. European trains are good value, fast and efficient and you can fly to many places very cheaply (for instance, I regularly fly a round trip from Bratislava to London for $35 on RyanAir and just a little more gets me a round trip to Pisa)
Europe is a friendly and fantastic place - don't be timid - get out and see it!
While you're in Belgium see all of Europe - you'll love it and it will change you forever.
Welcome to the old country.

NATO huh? If you liked Germany then go with Belgium. It's a little like a laid back version, similiar climates, etc. Italy on the other hand, I asume you're talking about down south, is very nice climate wise, the people were mostly nice to us but I thought too relaxed at times. Both very nice places to be based. I'd think the career prospects are dif though and that will prob be more of a factor. Enjoy!!!

Belgians would adore you. Their chocolate is better than that found in Germany. The Flanders is my favorite part of Belgium but then again I am biased. You can't go wrong anywhere you go. Consider housing outside the city if you're not thrilled with Brussels. The train system, like most European countries, is fabulous and would give you access to major points if you prefer the countryside.

I've travelled through Belgium. It's kind of a funky mix of Germany and France. For instance, I went to a truck stop that looked like an 1960's Winn Dixie in terms of fixtures and floor plan but it was colored and lit like the most ultra modern cafe. I found this to be illustrative of the rest of the country I saw ... laid back but very sleek.
