My "Ceniza" has passed on after nearly 8 years w/me. He had a bad case of Pyothorax. There was minimal suffering on his part, but I'm still trying to cope w/the loss.

In Februray of this year, my cat Smokie passed away. Smokie had been with me for 14 years. At the time Smokie died, I was very busy with personal stuff, so this could have helped me, to some extent. I just focused on comforting my cat Smudge, for whom Smokie was her constant animal companion since Smudge was a kitten and working.
That and talking a little bit about getting a new pet works, too. If you have other animals, then you should spend a lot of time with them.
For the first few days, spend time alone and go ahead and be upset. After that, you should put the last photo of Ceniza that was taken before his death up on a shelf where you'll constantly see it.
One thing I found to be oddly theraputic for me after my Smokie died was answering questions here. I found that the more answers I gave to people's questions, the better I felt.

First off I am so sorry about your baby. I have 5 animals myself and they arn't my pets they are my kids. My mother had a cat for 18 years and it was full grown when she found him. She had him before I was born he died last year. We were all very sad. It's really hard to deal with it but one thing I think help is to start over. Get a new kitty. And don't think of it as replacing him. Because you can't replace your baby of 8 years but you will have that complanionship still and it's fresh and fun. And always keep a memory of Ceniza. I wish you the best of luck.

I still feel horrible about losing my cat of 18 years last year so I really cant offer and suggestions for feeling better but I have found a website, www.thecatsite.com and they have lots of great forums, one specifically for people who have lost pets. You'll have to register before you can post messages but its worth it (and I havent gotten any junk mail from registering so I think its safe!)

I lost my Oliver, who I had for 3 years...He was a very smart cat, and just like a child to my husband and I...3 years later, and we still grieve. Time will help. God luck, dear one. I will send up a prayer for you.

I hated losing any of my babies, but They died in my arms wrap in there favorite bedding. If it was one of my shirts or my robe, favorite blanket. After they pass I would bury them in that very same item. It made me feel they would be happy forever. It made me feel better.

buy a new kitten, it helps - make a little marker out in the garden and put her ashes in it so that you can remember her
