But, this isn't hollow crystal. I am talking about a solid crystal astray. I cant tap on it, it is too thick, it makes no sound. Any other ideas?

Hold it up to a brite light. if it has a sparkler effect (looks like bright light shards are flashing) it is crystal. do this with something you know is glass and you will see the difference immediately- well, provided the ashtray was crystal.
ps- the more faceted it is the easier it is to tell.

A few ways, one is to go to a dimand store and ask they'll give u a lot it's worth 1 million an ounce. or do it yourself by taping it with a spoon lol ok use my way the real way

wet your finger and run it around the edge of the glass. It will have a distinct ringing sound. Now try it with a regular glass...see the difference.
