I have a jack russell and a king charles cav, The jack russell is nearly 2, and the cav is 1and half, The jack russell has just had pups 3wks ago, and the cav is the dad, they always got on well with the occasional fights which were scary! I am trying to get them used to each other again through the garden which is fenced in the middle so they have half each, (first time i did it yesterday) they went mad for a while barking) then growled through the fence, then really went in for the attack! dont know what would have happened if i wasnt there! Shall i just keep them apart for longer? I dont let the other dog near her pups, they were not playing, they actually went in to hurt as the jack russell wouldnt let go of his ear, and actually bit him(not draw blood) i seperated them, this is such a big worry as i just want them to get on like they did! help!!!

Your dogs are trying to establish a hierarchy, as to which one is dominant. You can solve the problem, by establishing yourself, as the dominant member of the group. When they fight, you must step in, separate them, and firmly reprimand both of them. Stay with the two dogs, and any time they are aggressive with one another, you must step in, and establish yourself as boss.

Wait until the pups are gone and definitely have the male neutered - the world really doesn't need more mixed breed pups and this will help with the fighting. If you're
not willing to do some real work, give one of them away. If you are, then do some obedience training at least 15 minutes every day with each of them - HEEL, SIT, STAY, DOWN, COME.
You are not providing clear, firm leadership if they think they have to fight for position in the pack. The more you separate them, the more they will fight when the get back together.
Make sure they are getting plenty of strenuous exercise every day, half an hour hard running, not just a walk around the block. Put them on leashes and leave them on, even in the house. If one dog even gives the other a dirty look, CORRECT him! Don't wait until a full blown fight breaks out. Make them do long down stays next to each other. Take turns handing each a treat one at a time as you say their name. Make them sit and stay before you feed them.
I'd also suggest reading some really good books on training. Try not to do it randomly - there are a lot of bad books out there also! These are some of my favorites:
What All Good Dogs Should Know - Volhard
Good Owners, Great Dogs - Brian Kilcommins
Dog Tricks : Eighty-Eight Challenging Activities for Your Dog from World-Class Trainers by Haggerty and Benjamin
Don't Shoot the Dog - Pryor
Training Your Dog: The Step by Step Method - Volhard
Dog Problems - Benjamin
Cesar's Way - Cesar Millan
Also, watch the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel. Cesar Millan is the best trainer I've ever seen on TV.

Putting a fence between the two dogs will make everything worse. I have dealt with many dogs that 'fight' between fences but they are friends in the park!
The JR will be protective of her pups so all meetings must be supervised. You need to find a behaviourist in your area to give you some help. It is too compex for me to answer here.
P.S. Do not try to be "top of the pack" You (or any human) can NEVER be a member of a dog pack unless you have 4 legs, grow a tail, kill and eat raw meat and mate with the alpha male AND produce pups.

This is pretty normal. I used to breed dogs. The mother is going to be territorial and very protective of her puppies. Your not supposed to bring the dad around the babies or the mother at all. When all the babies are gone and the mother is used to the idea they should be ok to be by one another again. Don't let the dad by the babies at all and after about a couple weeks you might be able to put the mom and dad together and see how they do. If you are planning on keeping the puppies it is a good idea to wait until maybe about 5 or 6 weeks and then try to introduce the puppies to the dad. Good luck!

The mother is gonna be a little crazy while she has pups on her; she can't help that, it's instinct. I think the garden will have to be off-limits to one or the other for awhile.
Once the pups are weaned and gone, both of your dogs need some proper training. Hire a professional, they're worth the money.

The female is just deffending her young. Dogs are territorial animals. particularly when it comes the females with their pups. My suggestion is to try to keep them seperated for awhile.
