I'm really suprised/shocked at the answers you've gotten so far. I understand and agree w/you that you must protect your dog IF the cats pose any danger to her, but what about the cats. It seems the lady is letting the cats roam where they may become a nusience to neighbors or worse become injured or pick up diseases, or get hit by cars. And if they are not neutered/spayed they will produce unwanted kittens.
If you care about animals, as it seems you do, it is your responsiblity to either trap the cats or find other persons in the neiborhood to help you get the cats and place them.
If you feel uncomfortable doing this because they are her cats just think she may be unable to care for them due to her illness. Also she may greatly appreciate your help if she cares for them. If she passes away you'll just have these cats totally uncared for. My suggestion would be to talk to her or her family re: these cats. Her family or friend knowing her situation might be willing to keep the cats or help you decide where they should be placed.
If not, just take it upon yourself to help these animals.
I've got many strays/ferals I feed on my back deck. I trap the ones I can and do my best to place them.
You might be a 'dog person' and I'm not suggesting you adopt them if you don't want to but don't just shoo them away to fend for themselves since that would be awfully cruel.

She can tie her cat in her yard I know cats don't like it but our neighbor does that because she does not want her cat to wander around. If the cats attack your dog. Do you think she will pay your vet bill if she already has a large medical bill of her own. ( the pepper will bother the dog also I dont know about the other stuff)

I think the best thing to do is be ready with a spray bottle the next time the cats venture into your yard. Turn the water adjustment valve on full stream, not mist, and douse them as must as you can. They will skiddadle right out of there. Repeat this procedure several times and they'll stay away.

Get a good squirt bottle, one with a stream not a mist, and add about half water and half lemon juice. Cats hate lemon juice and they hate water. Spray them when you see them in your yard or near your dog, just take it with you when you take your dog out. Eventually they will get the message. They're probably not going to do any damage to your dog. My cats just basically hiss and swat at the dog that comes in my yard, he's never been hurt. I think cayenne pepper or tobasco sauce is a bit cruel.

the spice is pepper... but i think it would be easier to get a bigger dog.. or maybe a tomcat who will chase the other cats away. Go for the bigger dog and the older dog might get a new outlook on life like mine has.

you can get one of those bb guns that shoots the plastic bb's so it will hurt the cats, but will not cause any actual harm. It will sting alittle bit. The cats will live. They will learn not to come back in your yard.

This is tricky; it's difficult to keep a cat from going wherever it wants. Maybe if you spray them with a hose a few times they'll learn to stay away.

Cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper. That's how I keep my cat's out of my house plants. You can also try a cut up lemon, my mom uses this to keep her cats off of things in her house.
