In this answer, I will describe what occurs when grays start growing, genetics, and other potential reasons you have gray hairs at 19. The first onset of gray hair and the speed at which people go gray varies considerably from person to person.

Melanin Production:

Gray hair is caused by the gradual reduction of melanin production over time within the affected hair follicle. The melanocytes in the hair follicles produce less and less melanin, and the result is a loss of hair fiber color strength. Blondes are most likely to develop a completely white head of hair in old age because their hair fiber has a very low density of pigment in it to start with.

Genetics:

The time and speed of gray hair onset is due in part to genetics. Certainly early onset gray hair development can run in families. Women are invariably affected by early and rapid onset gray hair while men have a more typical gray hair development. This difference in gray hair development might suggest that at least some of the genes that promote early gray hair onset are located on the X chromosome. However, there are most likely many genes that determine the time and speed of gray hair development located on several human chromosomes.

More Research Needs to be Done:

What genes determine gray hair is not known and much research needs to be done in this area. The environment may also potentially modify gray hair development but there is effectively no research on this subject.

It's the pigment in the follicle... there's only so much to last a lifetime. Once it's gone, your hair turns gray. It's genetic.

Don't worry! I noticed my first gray hair at 20! I've been dyeing it ever since! (now that I'm pregnant I have to wait a while, and it's soooo hard!!)

I don't know what causes it, but I've had a few strands of gray hair since I was 14.

Ah shucks, I was only 12 when I got my white hairs. It's about genes you inherit. Try checking the hairs of your parents or grandparents!

However, having white/grey hairs often relate to your lifestyle, whether you are getting enough sleep, how much stress you impose onto yourself...

It's most likely hereditary. Ask you dad if he, or other men in your family, went grey early in life. No big deal. Grey hair can be HOT on a young guy!
