Settle an arguement for me. Is it to allow air into the oven or to stop the broiler from cooling down or cycling off.

According to Alton Brown on the Food Network, it is to prevent the broiler from cycling off once it reaches a certain temperature. By leaving the door open, you are preventing the temperature from reaching its set point and thereby stopping it from cycling off.

I leave mine open a little bit so I can tell if my meat is getting too much flame and is scorching on the side that is up. I can hear the meat when it makes the noises like sizzling which is a good sound or when it is poping and crackling which is a very bad get me out of here sound!
I have had to eat too many burned on one side and almost raw on the other side steaks to leave it to chance! If I have something in the broiler I never leave the kitchen, I stay right there and monitor what is going on, even if it is french bread. With open flame cooking you can go from almost ready to burn't to an inedible thing in about 3 minutes if you are not careful.

I've never heard of anyone doing this... I never have and my broiled items always turn out great.

Seems to me it would keep the broiler too hot, it would cycle off and on constantly because it couldn't keep the temperature even.

Its to prevent the oven from cycling off. When the temp reaches a certain level in the oven, the element turns off, which is not what you want when broiling.

Once the oven reaches a certain temperature, the heat turns off. If you leave the door open, the heat never quites.

Neither... I open the door so the broiler doesn't get too hot and burn the food I am cooking.

I'm guessing it's to let steam out of the oven slowly.

My Mom always said she did it so she didn't forget what was in there and burn it!

In hindsight, maybe that isn't the best explanation...
