Because when attempting to decide the case Roe v Wade, the Supreme Court heard from religious, philosophical, and scientific experts on pregnancy, on the life and viability of a fetus, and they realized that no one agrees with one another. Some people say life begins when a sperm touches an egg, some at implantation into the womb, some at quickening, some at fetal viability (meaning that, if born now, the baby could live outside the woman's body). They decided that since experts were not in agreement about when a baby's life began, they could also not decide when precisely a baby began to have human rights. They decided, therefore, that until the third trimester, a woman's definite (read: generally agreed-upon) individual right to self-determination was to be given precedence over a baby's theoretical (read: not agreed-upon) rights to life. They decided this so that people who believed that life began later in pregnancy would not be forced to live by others' beliefs, especially since these beliefs are usually religious. So until the third trimester, it is about the mother because the mother is the only one in the equation with definite life and definite, legally established rights.

Because the baby isn't alive until very late in the pregnancy...early abortion such as in the first trimester is very much about the mother because its all there is, the baby is just a bunch of cells multiplying at the time and does not even have organs yet. However later in the pregnancy the baby's heart begins to beat and brain begins to show activity, that is when the baby is truely "alive" in a human sense, and that is when it should not only be about the mother but also about the baby. However, to consider the baby a seperate entity and life from the mother early in pregnancy is innacurate and wrong.

btw pink can spell liberal well :-P ...and obviously pregnancy is a choice otherwise any reasonable god wouldn't allow us to stop it.

Sometimes it IS about the baby.
If a parent knows that they're not going to be able to provide a good life for the baby (a young mother who would be unable to raise a child, a woman in an abusive relationship, fearing for the child's life)
or they know that the baby will have a poor quality of life as it grows (such as a foetus being diagnosed with Down Syndrome while still in the early stages of pregnancy), the parents may choose to terminate the birth.

Because Liberal agenda, and Democratic governments have distorted the truth about the so called "fetus" and made it an issue about choice. Choice comes with sex, pregnancy is not a choice, but rather a consequence of a PRIOR choice.

Silverwolfe, It has a heart and heartbeat at 6 weeks, organs and a nervous system that feels pain at 12 weeks. It is capable of survival at 5 months, yet women will abort past each of these milestones.

God ALLOWS us to kill a baby. By your argument murder is choice, he ALLOWS us to kill others, so it shouldnt be illegal? Just because it happens does not mean God approves, ot likes it. It is a misuse of the free will argument, you know that.

Because there is ambiguity as to when it should be considered a person, but there is no ambiguity as to whether or not the mother is a person.

Other than religious nutters, very few sane people consider a fertilized egg to be a person, yet few would deny that a new born is a person. If we can't be sure, best to leave it to the mom.

Because when abortion is considered there is no such thing as a baby, yet. But there is a mother.

Because this world is all about "me". It's a selfish world. Jesus died for the whole world, not just parts of it, or the ones WE think are important.
