You need to change the color of your hair. Black hair looks strange with highlights, almost a vampire look. Seek a hairstylist.

From experience I recommend not even wasting your time on trying to highlight your hair with a highlighting kit. The first time I ever did something to my hair was use a highlighting kit. It turned out awful bright orange specially because at that time I had black hair. I had to buy a hair color to dye it all back to dark. Have a professional do it. Highlights are hard especially on black hair and should never be done at home.

I would recommend using African Pride's brand. They have several different shades of highlights so you won't always get the "white blond" look or "orange" hair. And you don't have to add any booster packets or any more developer to it. Follow the instructions on the box and you will be fine. I have been using for over 2 years and It works great every time. You pull your hair through the cap and, it works fine. You say your hair is black. Did you dye your hair black? If not, your hair is not really black, it's dark brown so it will lighten. If you've recently dyed your hair black then it will be a waste of time.

If you really want blond, you'll have to pull them through a cap, and then apply hi-volume bleach ( 40 % ). You might have to do this a couple times, so, don't remove the cap until you've gotten the right lift. Wash off and towel dry and apply new mixture of same as previous one. Sometimes completely lifting all the color out of the hair and adding a blond color to the hi-lited pulled through hair is the best way to go. Be careful with those bleaching kits, they tend to always pull orange in dark hair. Good luck. Beauty schools are cheap too. Maybe there's a route for you.

None of the highlighting kits will get black hair blonde. Even some professional products would require a repeat application to get a blonde shade from black hair.
The best you will get will be orange. What I call "oops blonde."
The darker hair is the harder it is to get it blonde.

you can use bleach or a highlighting kit, just check on how strong they are, refer to the back of the box for which one you can use with your hair color, just bear in mind that when you bleach balck hair there is a strong possibility it will come out an orangy color.
your best bet would be to go to a hairdresser and get it done. that way you know it will look good.

you're gonn have to bleach if you want them to show up. for years i've had people simply highlight my hair, and nothing showed up on my black hair. so when i visited my mom, her hairdresser bleached my hair and the hightlights came out this really pretty light gold color without that coppery-orange look. go to someone good. it's worth the extra pay to have someone that knows what they're doing highlight black hair.
