The only way to be *really* sure is to take them in for a necropsy. You can make a guess, depending on what sort of animals you have near where you live. But why bother dwelling on it? Finding out the reason won't bring them back. Just accept it, and let them go in peace.
I'm sorry this happened to you.

I would guess raccoon or fox but this sounds like a coyote. Depends on where you live in the U.S. and how much woods is around you.Best way to keep pets safe from a coyote is to own a Great Pyrenese. May even be able to get a puppy free and train it. This dog is absolutely fabulous at guarding any animal including ducks and chickens ( as long as you teach it first) and loves cats as well. The pyrenese will kill a coyote. I was given a 2 yr. old female and she loved everything. Sat outside the dog kennel we had our baby ducks in at night and didn't let any of them out. Never had trouble with raccoons either when we had her. Neighbor had a raccoon on her deck that heard my pyrenese bark and took off running. Pyrenese will bring you possums once in a while as a gift. She laid them on the front porch and as soon as she went in the house the possum escaped.

Are you thinking it was a neighbors dog? Are you in open range? If you have problems with animals the best thing is to get a dog or to have friends dog do it's business in your yard.
I lived in th back woods for 3 yrs and even the bears didn't come in the yard as I had a big dog. But when she died all the critters came around.
