I dont really know a place in Houston but I work at a vet and have seen several dogs with heartworms go through treatment so I can tell you what to expect. It can cost up to $1000. Your dog will have to have 2 seperate intramuscular injections of immiticide. After the first injection you will have to limit your dogs activity because as the heartworms die than can get pushed out of the heart and can obstruct passages which can kill your dog. You will have to do warm compresses on the injection site to help with pain and swelling. All the dogs I have seen go through treatment have lived healthy lives afterwards. MAKE SURE TO KEEP YOUR DOG ON HEARTWORM PREVENTATIVE YEAR ROUND AFTER THE TREATMENT.
I am really sorry about your dog and i hope this was of some help

Heartworm can be fatal, there are 4 grades, 1 being a light burden and 4 being the worst. The treatment is arsenic based and is not without risk; it may result in pulmonary emboli which can kill the dog. If your dog is stage 4 the heartworms will need to be surgically removed which is a very delicate operation as you would expect.
Since you have already been diagnosed with heartworm by your vet go back and get them to treat it for you. Good luck

I don't know about Houston but, I'm sure you can find a good vet there. Ask your friends, look in the phone book, call a major college about their Veterinarian school clinic. If you have a dog, you HAVE TO HAVE A VET you trust. Are you sure your poodle has heart worms? They can be fatal to dogs. You need to get treatment for the dog...and quickly. Don't try to treat them yourself, heartworms take veterinary knowledge.

The cure for heartworms is very hard on a dog.
The cure is also very poisonous and your beloved pet will have a hard time recovering if it can at all.
Listen carefully to your vet, if your K9 pulls threw you will need to give it meds on a schedule.
To everyone that reads this. If you do not already have your animal on heartworm meds do so as soon as you can.

Sorry to say but the treatment is just as hard on your animal as the disease. The best thing to do is put it down . You obviously did not have time to take care of it to prevent this from happening so you won't have the time to take care of its treatments. Just let the poor little neglected baby sleep in peace.

Heart worm is treatable but sometimes the treatment can kill your dog. If too many worms die at once it can block arterys. You may want to look into ways to boost your dogs immune system as you are begining treatment.

Once they get it...I don't think it's treatable.
The heart gets filled up with the worms eating at it and choking the heart so the dog dies slowly in agony.
You should have got the dog on heart worm pills.

The vet who diagnosed her should be able to clear it up quickly. It is no longer fatal so don't worry. If you don't like that vet, try another. I live in Katy or I'd refer you to mine. Good luck!
