Toyota Yaris or Honda Fit.

I was trying to find the same thing. After lots of research, I found the Yaris by Toyota. It seemed to be very affordable with up to 40 mpgs at a price range from about $10,950 to $13,325. I'd say that's pretty good. It has great reviews and it's a cute, sporty looking car with a liftback or sedan choice. With the humble size, you can park it anywhere but still have enough interior room for friends or cargo. The only downfall is that it has only 106 hp. If you don't have to haul @$$ up a hill then it may be the right car for you.

No, I don't work for Toyota. I just think that this car seems really great and I'm really looking into buying one myself. Other cars out there may get great mileage, pretty good hp, but their starting prices are over $17-$18k. I guess it's all on how you look at "affordable". Good luck!

The Toyota Matrix and brother Pontiac Vibe (which is cheaper by a couple thousand, though the same car) are cool cars with gas mileage of 30 city/36 HW.

Try checking out the used rental car market for starters (They sell cars that are about one year old and have 20-25K miles on them...still plenty of life left in them)

If you want to do a little more work you can scan the local want ads (which are usually available on-line) and lastly check out Auto Trader for used cars available from both private seller and dealers. You can be specific about make, model, and radius of zip code.

Good luck.

Find a chevy geo..... I have started to see these more often, and very high mileage on the engines can be had. Any small car matched with a small 4 cylinder should get around or over 30mpg.

check out consumer reports. If you type in consumer reports on your search bar, it should give you the weblink. Once there, type in what you want to look at, you would type in automobiles. You can then compare prices, quality, MPG, and consumer reports ratings on these cars...they give star ratings 1 star is bad 5 stars is great.

You can subscribe to Consumer Reports online. There you can find most cars listed with pricing, gas mileage and other useful information.
