Dont be a fool man!!!!! The 2003 Jetta is based on the Mk4 GOLF which is considered to be the most unreliable & dull to drive. Dont waste your money on it. A Mk5 Jetta is much much better.

I, too, have a 2000 Golf GLS. I have 156,000 miles and spend rather little on repairs. However, after this many miles, my suspension is worn, and I expect that my clutch will go relatively soon. Maintenance is key- regular oil changes and plugs and wires when needed, etc.
Prior to this car, I had a 1995 Golf GL. I personally drove it for 180,000 miles and I gave it to my boyfriend when I bought the 2000. We replaced the clutch just before 200,000 miles and he drove it until the engine gave out around 250,000 miles - this is a gasoline engine with standard transmission, not a diesel. He's hoping to replace the engine because he loved the car, too.
While we were together, my boyfriend did ALL the maintenance on both cars -- including changing the brake pads, putting a sports suspension on the '95 and more, and he's not a trained mechanic. We just bought the maintenance manuals, plus he got some advice from a neighbor who is a mechanic.
Prior to the '95 I had an 1987 Golf GL, which I drove until 175,000 miles, when I bought the '95. At that time, I was married to a mechanic so that helped with repairs. He got the car and sold it at some point after we divorced, so I don't know how far that one went.
In 1987 and 1990, I also worked in the service department for a couple VW dealerships. My observation has been that the manual transmissions are more reliable than the automatics- plus they're better on gas and a lot of fun to drive- so I recommend the stick-shift.
Now, almost 11 years and more than 500,000 miles after I purchased the first Golf, I am planning on getting a new car. The new Rabbits are cute, and I love the Eos; but my son's a teenager who plays basketball, so he and most of his friends are big. The Touareg is too expensive and has low MPG, the diesel Touareg is reportedly priced over $60,000! So I'm looking at the Rav-4, Mazda CZ-7, Saturn Vue (Hybrid), and other small SUVs, but I'm nervous about going with something different. I feel so at home in those VeeDubs.
Of course, buying a used vehicle is always a risk - so find out as much as you can about its history and the previous owner's driving habits, if possible. But generally, I do recommend VWs.

2003 VW Jetta is a nice little car. If you can find one with a manual transmission and a Diesel engine the mileage is UNBELIEVABLY GOOD! Overall, they are well constructed cars. I have heard some complaints about reliability in comparison to others, but it should not be anything substantial that breaks. I DID read somewhere about VW's with the 1.8T engine using some oil...like a quart every 1000 miles...and VW says this is normal...If its going to use oil...may as well get the Diesel! Drive a Jetta...but before you buy one, drive a Ford Focus as well. The Focus has been on 'Car and Driver' magazines 10 best list for 6 years now... Same size car, just from Fords European Division...It should be alot less expensive overall than the Jetta but I believe just as good! Good Luck!

The '03 Jetta is a really awesome car!! I own a '04 Jetta, TDI (turbo diesel) 1.9 liter with 5 spd trans and not only is it a fast little car, but the fuel economy is excellent. It is getting between 46-48 city and around 52mpg on open highway. The salesman at the VW dealer where I got mine said he was getting 56mpg from his. There are very smooth and quite on the road. Very comfortable and fun to drive. After having this car for almost two years, very little has gone wrong with the car. I am sold to the reliablity and dependability that VW has given me. Try one out. You will never want anything else!!

I own 2000 Golf GLS, which is the same car with a slightly different body. It offers a very solid drive and all the modern conveniences. But..., after ~70,000 mi I've been spending ~$800 per year on repairs.
