Animal shelter, Retirement home, local park, hospital. You can volunteer almost anywhere. Just find something you like to do, see where it can be done, and call and ask if they allow volunteers. There are some places that only accept a limited number of volunteers, but it doesn't happen that often. Go out and try it.

The Red Cross is always in need of volunteers. Also, animal shelters and the Humane Society welcome any volunteers. You may also want to check with local nursing homes or homeless shelters in the area. Check you local paper, most have a volunteer area in the classified section. Good luck.

Go to the volunteermatch website. You can set up email alerts for your favorite volunteer issues...whether it's animal rights, environment, education, etc.
Also, one type of place that I am interested in volunteering at are the local historic sites. If you like history and historic places, you can check out the historic sites near you to see if they need volunteers for restoration, preservation, tour guides, or even reenactments...that sort of thing.

Hospitals, homeless shelters, soup kitchens and literacy programs. I have volunteered in each of these places and I walked away from each of them feeling better about my life and more appreciative of what I had.
Its good to hear that some people still want to volunteer. Good luck. God Bless.

Volunteers of America is one organization. (though, it's mostly an organization for women's groups. Not a criticism, just a fact) Another possibility is your area's Literacy council. I used to tutor for (legal) immigrants, and a couple students with learning disabilities. If you're looking for a more active avenue, you may look into search and rescue..... S.A.R. takes an investment of time and training, (and some $ in equipment) but is an incredibly rewarding way to give back to one's community.

Depending on how old you are, the Big Brother Big Sister organization is good. Or you can go and visit people in nursing homes, help with Meals on Wheels, etc.

Do you like animals? Try your local pet shelter. They have a really hard time getting all the help they need usually.
