The purpose of the back swing is to put the golf club in a position to make the forward swing through impact to the follow through. It is a rhythmic loading of the right side to enable a firing of these muscles to properly swing the club as to propel the ball on it's intended path. The better the position, the better the chances of repeating for a successful shot. It can be done many ways. However; there are certain fundamental positions that, if applied properly, will make it more readily functional.

I guess you could compare it to loading a gun and pulling the hammer back. The backswing gets everything in position and all you have to do is pull the trigger. Take back wrong you don't stand a chance.
following a series of checkpoints can help you achieve a proper backswing.
