Where do you call to get information about military service?

Question

My ex-husband has been gone for over 2 years and has left no real information here for his 10 year old son. I would like to get some information about his service in the Marine Corps and his medals, etc for my son. I found a copy of his DD214, but don't know if there is a way for me to get any information.

My ex-husband served in Vietnam in the early 1970's, so I don't think there is any ID information left, but he is living and his whereabouts are unknown. Since we are divorced, I wasn't sure if they would give me any info.

All military personnel records are kept at the St Louis records office. Hang onto the 214, it is gold!! In one of my previous answers someone was asking about VA home loans and business loans. I provided him with a ton of information that you will need. It is in my best answer profile. Contact the VA, Local/closest military installation personnel office, military recruiting station, American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) organization. You can also log onto military.com for assistance. You are on the right track and something will pop up for you very soon. Since your ex was a veteran, his son may qualify for educational assistance for college or vocational schools? Now is the time to investigate this, because the process can be lengthy and tied up with a lot of red tape. I hope this helps. Good Luck!

Find someone who can read a DD214. There is a ton of information on it. It will tell what training, what skills, a little about assignments, what medals, any disabilities, what rank etc. It will indicate how long your husband served. It will reflect character of service, i.e. honorable or otherwise.

What it does not seem to provide is units served. Other than that, what more do you need?

If you still have your military ID you are still entitled to all your benefits and so is your son. Even if the father is deceased, you can contact a local Marine Corps recruiter and they can provide you with valuable information. You can also find information from Headquarters Marine Corp, www.hqmc.usmc.mil that is a link but you can find others in a net search, hope that helps

Go to your veterans service office in your town. Take DD214 with you. He will help you with whatever you need and has all the forms to fill out.

Unfortunately, I doubt you can get any information. They are a secretive group, but it does not hurt to try. Contact the nearest Marine base & they can point you in the right direction on who to talk to.
