For life....it's not a "diet" it's a lifestyle change! I start a low carb in 2003. Lost all the weight I needed to lose plus some....then got pregnant again! As of how much weight you can lose on a low carb diet....everyone is different! I lost 27lbs my first month and 69lbs in 6 months. I maintain for two years!
Here's a medical point of view of a low carb diet (from my doctor.)
DRINK PLENTY OF WATER!
ALL THE PROTEIN IS HARD ON THE KIDNEYS!
JUST KEEP THE KIDNEYS HYDRATED!

It could take 5 months or more to lose 40 lbs on just a low carb diet. You should try aerobic exercises along with the diet for better and faster results.

I find it hard to stay on the low carb diet. I still watch my carbs, but I allow myself only the good carbs that come from whole grains not foods like chips, cookies, soft drinks, juices, ect. You should try adding more exercise to keep the weight off.

Low-carb diets are hard to keep up. Besides, carbs are your main energy source! A much better way to lose weight is to eat less (and/ or more healthily) and exercise more.

Long enough to see that it doesn't work for everyone..........I lost 100 pounds, drinking a gallon of water a day, exercising 1-2 hours daily (aerobic exercise), and eating ramen noodles & salads, and taking a multi-vitamin pill................I've kept the weight off for 6 years now...........Good Luck!

Do you mean you're on a high protein diet? High protein diets are unhealthy.
Eat lots of vegetables and fruits (and no, french fries and potatoes don't qualify). And eat complex carbs.
Your body needs proteins, but a high protein diet will eventually kill you.
