Maybe people don't vote because we place no value on it -- if we charge enough, everyone will want to vote!

Geez, people could put it on their Mastercard or Visa! Some people just can't stand it when other people have good ideas.

Simple. People already don't get out and vote. Voter turn out is always poor. So if we charge even less people will turn out and vote.

Ooo, goooood one! A poll tax. Yeah. Great. Only the wealthy can vote. What about a literacy exam, so only the educated can vote? What about a DNA test so only people from the "right" race can vote? What about a medical exam, so only the healthy can vote?
Damn, dude. We are supposedly living in a democratic republic, here in the US of A, and even so, there's maybe 30-40% already barred from voting by the courts or infirmity or age.
Voting needs to be more accessible, not less. Or else we need to just tank that whole "democracy" idea as a failed experiment and let the market decide. Yeah, oligarchy has its proponents, especially among the rich.

It's hard enough to get people to polls without charging, so charging would cause even LESS voting. On the contrary, I think we should PAY people to vote. Or better yet, have a little perforated tear-off ticket on the ballot and have a lottery. Give away $1,000,000. Voting would increase by millions.

If we had a decent President we could pay down the debt. Clinton did it and refunded money. It is a right for us to vote, people would not pay for a privilage we fought for. Why don't they close the loopholes for the rich
That would help, and charge CEO's of companies making billions an extra tax for being rich.

Well now, there is an idea!! Unfortunately we would need to undo around 150 years of law and other efforts to eliminate the poll (voting) tax that was in common use in the early days of the republic. But I have an idea. Let's go ahead and do it, and let's set the price at something I can afford, but you cannot!

Get the drift?

Because it would be against the ideas of the american constitution you moron.

You should not have to pay to vote. Because anyone of age should be allowed to vote, not just those who can afford it.

It would be unconstitutional, but the wealthy would love it.
