Theoretically, if all you needed to do was "believe in" Christ, anybody could go to heaven. But it’s not just about believing that Jesus existed and that he may or may not have been the Son of God. The Bible is clear throughout that it takes a change of heart to actually be "saved." There is no "get-out-of-hell-free-card."
Jesus said that the only way to have eternal life is to know God and himself (John 17:3). This means that a person has to be in communication with God, trusting him. Without faith it is impossible to please God. (Hebrews 11:6)
A murderer can go to heaven if he truly believes that Jesus is God’s Son, asks for forgiveness, and changes his life. (1 John 1:9) None of us deserve heaven, but by accepting God’s gift and believing that Jesus is who he says he is, anyone can receive eternal life. (John 3:18-21)
(For more on this, see Romans 3:21-31; 6:15-23.)

You are correct that a Christian would say that a murderer could go to heaven. I don't think that someone who is a real Christian would commit sins on purpose -- Christians are called to perfection, and although we often fail in it, we cannot just make up our minds to stop trying. I think it would be a grave and unforgivable sin for someone to murder in cold blood and then just expect to be saved because they believe in Jesus Christ.

No, when you accept Christ as savior He dwells in your heart. If you killed someone on purpose after knowing what christ did for you I don't think you could bare to see the face of Christ when you died and would probably choose to go to hell on your own. Why would you want to sin on purpose? That is like smacking the man who died and suffered for you in the face.
Satan believes in Christ and hes not going to heaven.
There is more to being saved than just believing my friend.

A Christian is one who follows Christ. Anyone who willingly commits sin is not following Christ. In order to be saved, we must recieve Jesus as lord of our lives, and as our saviour. Also, we must repent of our sins. Repent means to turn away from sin. Trust me - no one gets over on God. I couldn't live a terrible life and then just say "oh - sorry." God examines the heart.

No, there is more to it than just believing in him. If a murdered ask for forgivness and his heart was in the right place and he wanted to serve the Lord, then he would be forgaven. This is just how I believe okay, I believe we must worship him, put him first, obey him, dont be ashamed of him, love, honor, and ask for forgiveness daily. And dont do something nice for someone, and think that he's goin to let u when the lottery!!
Sweetie the best advice I know to give u, is u need to hit those knees and pray to him, talk to him, tell him what's on ur heart, and listen w/ur heart not ur ear's. Trust me there hasn't been a time he hasn't let me down. I'll pray for u.

No, we are not free from sin, we are forgiven for our sins...when we ask, that is.
You cannot murder someone and think that because you say you are a Christian you wouldn't be judged for it by God. God knows your heart and knows when you mean what you say.
If someone committed a murder before they were saved, repented, and turned from that sin, then yes, they would go to heaven. If the person TRULY asks for forgiveness and repents, they no longer wish to commit such acts.
God Bless.

Believing in Christ is to be a good Christians and one of those rules is 'thou shall not kill'.
Muslims basically believe in the same thing. They must believe in Allah and his prophet they will enter heaven.
Just believing isn't enough, if it was true, then Satan will be permitted to enter heaven, because he too believe in God.

I was taught if you atone for your sins you went to heaven. I don't believe it. I think if you do terrible things to others even if you believe in Christ, you don't go to heaven.

Nobody gets to heaven if they aren't sincere. God sees the heart, and knows what our motives are. God cannot be tricked, He is just, and very wise. If someone repents from their heart, He knows it's sincere. Remember the thief on the cross next to Jesus?
