braid your hair before bed and when you wake up take em' down
bigger braids=wavy
lots of small braids=crimped
Hit it with hair spay then let it dry when you wake up for it to last longer
One big normal braid will make wavie, the more braids the better, usualy.

Twist or braids will work, the trick is to use warm or hot water or a pomenade that can hold the wave or else you have to sleep overnight with it. When yoou wake up, untwist them or unbraid the hair and use moisturizer to keep it moist and frizz free. I hope that is what you were looking for.

I think either way would provide a wave effect that is if you braid it wet and undo it when it is dry. Another way is to get a wave permanent or buy a wave hot iron.

If your strands are thin, you can apply curling gel and flip your head upside down and dry with a diffuser -- I use L.A. Looks gel #10 -- It's yellow. And I follow up with Tresemme curl care to scrunch after it is dry. You can try it with thick hair too. It might work.

If you want loose waves that last a while get a perm that uses large rollers.

mega jumbo rollers. spray your hair or put mousse in it before you stick em im. hot rollers are the best. no velcro rollers. they pull your hair apart when you take em out and make you hair look frizzy
