I personally think that is a few assholes in the world that dont raise their dogs right and give this breed its reputation. Yes they are more protective dogs but if trained right they are amazing! And some are just amazing I COULD NOT SAY IT BETTER!!!!
They are very loyal and maybe over protective if not taught correctly.Mine was like a marine trained to the maximum you couldnt get him to disobey. One hr every day training and lots of love

I love pitbulls.they are wonderful dogs if well socialized and have received a bad rep blown way out of proportion.People want to say things like :"oh well i saw on the news...." and i stop them right there,of course they "saw on the news...." ,a pitbull attack makes good news, its fueling controversy that already exists, much better accepted than a headline of "Golden retriever attacks".
I guess what I'm trying to say is the media would much rather fuel an existing fire than start a new one.
On the other hand, pitbulls are naturally aggressive,A good look into their background wont hide that, they have always been used for fighting in pits, and have a natural predatory instinct rivaling that of wolves.
A well socialized pit that has grown up around kids and cats can be the greatest dog in the world, yet a pit doesn't have to be neglected or mistreated to be a terror in public,it just has to be non-socialized.
a non socialized pit can be the nicest dog in the world around its owners but very untrusting of,and possibly hostile towards, strangers.
They also will go after cats and small animals if not accustomed to small critters.
that is my opinion of the pitbull breed.

I got my first pit when she was 5 weeks old from an experienced breeder with a family setting for his dogs. My Candy has been nothing but a loving loyal pup, she is now 8 mo old and still as sweet as the 1st day I got her. I also have another female pit who is 1yr 4mo old with different bloodlines who was raised as a game dog. Since I took her into my home she has become just as sweet as Candy. I believe if your going to own one you need to be experienced with their background as a breed and also the pups bloodlines. Some people backbreed to have more aggressive dogs who should not just be raised by anyone. They were bred that way for a purpose and thats to protect and defend.

My opinion is that Pit Bulls are a breed of dog that Dog breeders spent too much time on and resulted in an inbred species of dog. As a result of this I think that PBs have a tendency to have their hard wiring warped and some of them snap and with they're lock-jaw feature this makes an awesome mess.
I agree though that they can be properly trained yet, I still think there is a susceptibility to 'go out of control'.

It's a funny thing...If a pit even pees on the wrong tree, It's all over the news...What ya don't hear is the golden retrievers, labs, and the huskies that have attacked people(a friend of mine works for the city pound)...hmmm yes they are a large dog with the potential to hurt people...but can't that be said for ANY other dog??? I am a proud owner of one, It's not the dog it's the owners, ignorance plays a HUGE part. Treat a dog like crap and get crap in return. So any breed you think of getting research and not only talk to breeders actually talk to owners...hope this helps:)
Whew thanks for letting me blow off steam!!!

I think pitbulls are very protective and defensive, but depending how they are raised they can be violent or just playful. Puppy pits like to bite a lot show them what to bite and what not to bite and from there they get there knowledge of how to behave.

Pitbulls are nice dogs if they come from responsible breeders and are raised responsibly. We have had good pits, and a few that were downright mean. Now we have American Bulldogs. (My male took care of the two mean stray pits that kept coming in our yard!)

Yes they can be the funniest sweetest lap-dogs you have ever laid eyes on, and totally loyal. Or yours could develop into one like my former neighbor's dog and get increasingly more aggressive then come on to your property to threaten you.
I'm not sure you'd want to take a chance with that, especially if I had young children.

Heres a story for you-
My daughter at 2 was learning how to swim under water in our pool-she was practicing holding her breath in the deep end. Brodi our 4 y/o PITBULL saw she was under water for quite some time-he dove into the water -swam under water-grabbed her arm and "pulled her to the steps in the shallow end
Yes he left a couple scratches on her-but she was safe-in his eyes
I will leave the answer to your question up to you
