There are a lot of benefits to joing the military. You get the tangible benefits that many people answering this question listed: GI Bill (money for college), a steady pay check, health/dental care for you and your dependents, free perscriptions, and housing (or money for housing depending on the situation). The real things you get are the intangible benefits. You learn self discipline. You learn how to stay physically fit. You learn how to conquer things you are scared of. You learn how to challenge yourself. You learn about how to work with people whose backgrounds are very different from your own. You will travel (maybe not always to the most desirable locations). You will learn to value the freedoms that our country offers more. All of the people that those who have never joined who chose to speak ill of the military are not qualified to answer the question. Not everyone has a good experience (and the people who have not have a right to their opinions), but I love it.

The question should be what do you get that is guranteed? all of the things everyone is telling you you can get, can be taken away at anytime. Education benny's can be lost if you don't keep a certain gpa, insurances and pay can be taken away by congress. and don't bet on veterans preference when it comes to post military employment. Also, you can expect to not be thanked by your fellow citizens for your service, IE: viet Nam vets. They got spit on.

Depends on what you're looking for, there is money for schooling, and considering the war situation they are probably giving BIG sign up bonuses. During difficult times like these they will give you just about anything you want.
