512 MB is 512 MB or 512000 KB.
As for usb flash drives, these storages are rounded and since the flash drives carry their own internal hidden software, keep in mind that about 20 MB is unavailable for your use.

1 GB = 1,024 Mega Bytes
512 MB = a half a GB
I have a flash drive that is 512 MB and it has 480 MB of storage for me to use (that isn't taken up by the hidden files). It cost me about $55 but the price of flash drives is going down.

Just assume 1GB is 1,000MB for easy calculation.
one CD-RW is about 800MB therefore, 1GB is slightly a little more then a CD capacity.
