I have a Rotti Lab Cross. He is 4 years old and 127 pounds. His duclaws grew out of control and eventually circled around and dug back into his foot. Got the duclaws cut today and it turns out that where the duclaws had dug in there was puss. The person who cut his duclaws said that he has an infection there now. Took him straight to the vet and the vet said he would have to knock Hercules (my dog) out, shave, clean and maybe cut and stitch and a whole bunch of other stuff. At the end of the examination Hercules got an antibiotics shot and we were told to make an appointment with the vet.

My dog-saavy friend actually said that it shouldn't be necessary to do all that and told me to give him 1 mg per pound of benadryl. up to 3 times a day and soak his feet in betadine and warm water 3 times/day. I just want to confirm whether or not this is a possible solution, see if there is an even better solution or if I will in fact have take him to the vet and have him sedated. Thanks so much

If it were a farm animal, simply soaking an abscess in warm water and epsom salt a few time a day, and cleaning it with hydrogen peroxide would work just fine. You may also want to stop at the closest farm supply place and pick up some animalintex (a dry, padded poultice) which will help draw out the infection, and a roll of vet-wrap to secure it. Don't cover it with something that will be continuously damp (like an ointment), fresh air and dry environments are really hard on pus.

That is the correct dosing of benedryl, but I am not sure how an anti-histimine will help an infection. Most vet don't want to stitch up an already infected area. If it were my dog, I would ask for oral anitbiotices from my vet, apply triple antibiotic ointment twice daily and do warm compress on it 2 -3 times a day. See if your vet really feels it is necessary for sedation.

well taking to the vet. was the best choice, because once you see the pus it is because there is an infection that has to be treated with antibiotics in order help the healing by killing the bacterias.
About the sedation... first, your dog is scare of being at the vet office, touching the painfully foot was not fun at all for him, and in order to cut, clean and soak the foot the technician had to hold the dog down, so I'm pretty sure your dog tried to bite to protect himself, so the sedation was needed and I bet the doctor asked permit ion for this.
then, your friend advice it is good when the problem it is not bigger than a simple cut or scratch

don't think that nonsense approximately AIDS being unfold oftentimes this variety. it rather is fairly no longer likely which you will get HIV or hepatitis from this razor blade. The extra probably an infection would be tetanus and that's distant in the adventure that your vaccinations are contemporary. this is a distant possiblity besides. the likely would be a gentle irritation which you will incredibly word. Microorganisms don't have a protracted survival span outdoors their optimal environments. some hours at terrific. which you would be able to contract HIV or any of the hepatitis viruses, an contaminated person would have had to have bled on the razorblade (or are turning out to be tissue fluid or semen on the razorblade) and you will have had to neglect with regards to the blood and cut back your self with it very just about on the instant after that. What do you think of the probabilities are high that that's what occurred??? i think of you subject too plenty.
