no, it means that she was physically a woman, in appearance and foreingsically, but she did not befitt the image of a so-called English lady, who is graceful, elite, has poise and beauty, has wit and sophistication, who can be cold but never rude, she can be charming, classy.She is dignified in whatever she does, if she has a set of admirers, then there is nothing cheap in the way she reacts, u call call her an epitome of class.

I guess it`s not about being conservative. We are talking about a person who is female but we aren`t sure of her womenishlike features. A lady is very tactfull, gracefull and charming creature and not all women are ladies.

This simply means thats she is a woman/female genetically but lacking class, sophistication, and dignity.
