Your 50th is an anniversary worth celebrating. There are three hotels that I would recommend.

The Drake (voted most romantic for 2006)
The Burnham
The Palmer House

Take a look at each of the websites below. Depending upon your desired location, you can't go wrong with any of these hotels that are frequently rated 10 of 10 stars.

I'd stay on Michigan Avenue at the Omni if you are wanting to shop the Mag Mile. If it's a historically interested person the Drake or the Palmer House are two very old and uniquley Chicago spots. All three are easy distances from the lake which is the key to a happy stay in Chi-town if August is when you must go there.

Try the Allegro Boutique Hotel, it is in the heart of the theater district and close to Marshall Fields State Street. Their address is:
171 W. Randolph, phone 312-236-0123. lovely hotel with superb amenities and staff. The hotel also plays host to many of the cast members to plays running downtown. A bargain for the price. Have a wonderful time enjoying the city.

I stayed at the Hotel Allegro in the theatre district last November and had a great time. The decor is fantastic, the staff was very friendly and accomodating and best of all the rates were very good. Conceirge was helpful. If you drive, they have parking available for a $30 per day fee in a secure parking garage just steps away from the hotel.

The Drake.

Hands down - it is such a historic hotel and really represents Chicago well. They also have great food, views and an awesome location. I would recommend going to tea there as well. You can head over to a bunch of bars/restaurants from there when you need to move on. Plus the shopping is great.

Happy Birthday!

Pretty much any of the Hotels on the Lake.

You could also go to the Holiday Inn Mart Plaza. Get reservations at least 2 weeks in advance and tell the concierge that it is a birthday weekend. I believe you get a free Continetal Breakfast or Lunch at the Rag-A-Muffin.

The W Hotel or the Marriott downtown. The Crowne Plaza Silversmith is not a good hotel to stay in. Its too tucked away. The rooms are nice though but the view sucked
