This dream quite obviously means that, aside from the fact that you are clinically depressed, the Mets will win the Super Bowl this year. Place your bets now, lady!

I would have said absolutely nothing about the idea of a missed-out childhood. And I'm still thinking it's got nothing to do with the actual dream.
Note that you said it's formal. Usually, dreams can be interpreted a thousand different ways, but I won't keep you. The formality of the event itself could very easilly signify something in your life that was... more than important, but seemed to be vital. This could be related to family funeral, birthdays forgotten, anything that seems to have a significant effect on your life that also included loss. The reason I say loss is because you never get what you wanted. Either the dress (the emotions or feelings that surround you) or the dance itself (the actual goal).
That, however, is a possible explanation. I hope you find the answers you're looking for.

This sounds like an anxiety dream, that seems to carry a great deal of emotional charge. Anxiety dreams are not there to torment the dreamer but rather to draw your focus to the urgency of identifying and dealing with the sources of anxiety, which if left to themselves may wreak havoc in the unconscious.
This may also be a Frustration dream, to dream of failing to get what we desire often suggests a lack of communication between the conscious and unconscious minds, indicating that unconscious instincts are being suppressed by the ego and are unable to fulfill themselves during waking life. Or perhaps,if you don't want to go Freudian, simply lack of communication with your husband.
A spouse transformed into a stranger may reveal an ambivalence in your general feelings about your relationship.
Dancing can represent sexual courtship, or even stand as a metaphor for sexual intercourse. Dancing can also symbolize the creative powers of the imagination.

Dreams are just Dreams. We sleep and our Brain makes home videos to entertain itself. But, I will give an answer.
This is a subliminal thought in your mind that you have married the wrong man. In your Dream you seek the man you truly wanted to marry, but, he is not there. As you believe in your mind, we can never find the perfect person. Your dress is your self esteem. You feel you can never measure up to the man you actually would like to marry, thus, you feel your a Dress in the closet, instead of the Beautiful Dress that you are.
Hope you like this, I enjoyed trying my hand at Dream Interpretation.

it's very personal, how do you feel about dancing? does it make you self conscious or do you really enjoy it? I think the dream shows the stress of getting ready for formalities... work, obligations and so forth. I don't think your partner in the dream is the important thing. I never went to my school dances either and i've never dreamt about them :-) But maybe you do feel like you're missing opportunities or something.

The formal dance is the realization of your life goals. You're not prepared in your daily life to accomplish these goals perhaps because you are afraid you will not succeed. The beautiful dress is your self-esteem and you are having to settle for less than high self-esteem. You have doubts about your abilities and you can't manage to get to the dance because other realities get in the way of your path. You need to focus more clearly on your goals by preparing your dress and directions to the dance. Good Luck!.....)(

When I read your entry, the first thing I thought of was that you had expectations that in your life today, have not been met. And you feel that you are running out of time to `get there' so that you can realise your purposes.
Hope this helped, I'm only looking at this from ONE viewpoint!
Meanwhile, perhaps you could sit down and work out just exactly what you DO want to have happen in your life!
Good luck!

It sounds like you are dealing with the desire to achieve something in your life or happiness of some sort and because you are not attending the dance in your dream there are obstacles in your way stopping you from getting there or 'achieving your goal/happiness' in waking life. Maybe you are feeling inadequate in real life. Try going to http://www.dreammoods.com and looking up your dreams I have dream books and they are really interesting. Basically dreams are representations of what is going on in your day to day life and are almost poetic ways to help you figure things out.

It could possibly mean that there's some goal in your life that you are trying to attain and there are things that keep coming up or happening to you that hold you back from getting whatever it is you want most.
It could also symbolize frustration at not being able to control certain things in life. Perhaps you feel that if you had more control over more things your life would be more ideal.
The dance you are trying to get to symbolizes the ideal or goal, and the situations that prevent you from getting there could symbolize things in real life that are keeping you from getting to your goal.

Sounds like you are worried about doing something important, only to be disappointed afterwards OR you regret you never went to the prom or any school dance.
Try this; when you lie down; stretch your feet forward, then back, 3 times. Tighten up your stomach, then relax, tighten up your shoulders, then relax. This will make the muscles more relaxed, endorphins will flow, and you will sleep better.
