Don't fret about it too much. An abnormal pap could mean something as simple as you having a yeast or bladder infection. Just go back and have another pap done before you become too scared.

Yep. Been there. It's a good chance that you might have the HPV (not to be confused with the other virus can be fatal). This is a virus that is spread by sexual contact and often lies dormant for years with no symptoms (of course until you get a pap smear). This virus can cause both genital worts or an abnormal pap. The strain you might have causes the latter. The potentially dangerous thing...is that it could cause cervical cancer. You need another pap to make sure everything's okay. You also need to know that if you have this virus you can pass it to your partner and he (if you guys end up splitting up) can give it to his next girlfriend. If you're in a relationship, let your partner know about this. It'll be tough (been there) but if he's like my hubby he won't plan on going anywhere else for a long time. Hope I helped explain this a little better.

abnormal pap doesn't always mean "cancer". It could simply mean that maybe you had sex a day before your pap or that there was something else that should up for it to be abnormal. I had a abnoraml pap 4 years ago and was told the same thing. When I go regularly I get normal paps. Relax!! Just keep your eyes open with it and don't stress. Good luck

No abnormal paps are actually more common than not. There is a common virus called HPV that you need to have them test for. This can result in an abnormal pap smear. They will give you more information on it if you have it. The statistics are that 1 in 3 women have HPV and don't even realize it.

I had this happen. I went in in September and they said it was abnormal, come back in 3 months. So I had another one done and it was still abnormal. But the doctor tested the second one for cancerous cells and said that came back negative. He said I could be having abnormal ones due to a slight infection ot inflammation. I know telling you not to worry is not going to help, so read here: http://womenshealth.about.com/cs/papsmears/a/abnormalpaps.htm
I have known quite a few women who had abnormal paps and didn't have cancer. Hang in there!

i am a lab tech and see this all the time. tons of people have abnormal paps, i have. don't worry, there is nothing you can do. if you've had a pap w/ in the past year before the abnormal, it's very likely it's nothing, and if it is something, it will have been caught soon, so it will be ok. like i said, don't stress, we call pepole back all the time, and turns out to be nothing.

Listen to all the women here who have told you not to worry. An "abnormal" pap smear is not unusual and there are many harmless things that can cause one. Although this is easier said than done, try not to worry yourself about it. Take it one day and one step at a time. I've been through this myself.

Take a deep breath. You will be just fine. Some times the test could be abnormal due to human error. I hardest time is waiting to find out. Fill that time with other activities so that you aren't having time to sit and worry.
