Well..what a bunch of crap answers. One thinks that you are
judging God simply because you dare to ask a question. Another
says that if bad things happen to you it is because you have
sinned. Or maybe it is that you dont have enough faith??!!
Better still, being bored, God spends His time TESTING
everyones faith. If we made a profile of God using the traits
these other boffins have used to describe Him, He would look
like an ugly human, not a Divine loving God.
As a Christian I am appalled by these missinformed,
judgemental and misrepresented answers.
My understanding of the Bible tells me this...the reason bad
things happen to good people is because God has given
humanity "free will". The guy next door has the free will to be an
asshole and rob your house. It is not a test from God. God does
not make burglars steal so he can test the faith of people. That
is not the message of God in the book of Job. I have been to
Bible college and I know.
If God took free will away from people we would all be like robots.
There is no way for God to allow us free will and to control
people at the same time. That is why it is the CHOICE not to sin
that is so important to God. If God controled us all, we couldnt
CHOOSE not to sin.
Good Luck
Jimmy

James 1:13 says: When under trial, let no one say: “I am being tried by God.” For with evil things God cannot be tried nor does he himself try anyone.
It goes back to the garden of Eden and what Adam and Eve did. Many of the bad things that happen today are a result of sin we inherited from Adam and Eve, but then we also have the Devil, as was the case with Job. If you read Job chapter 1 you will see that Satan made a challenge that humans only serve God out of selfish motives and if humans were to suffer trials that they would give up and curse God. While Job proved that claim false, it opened it up to all humans that we serve God out of selfish motives. So God has given Satan time to prove whether that claim is true or not, so just like Satan brought terrible things upon the faithful man Job he is still bringing terrible things on all humans trying to get them to give up on God. But God won't allow this to go on forever, he will soon step in and restore things back to his original purpose, because this world is not how he intended things to be.

If man was created in god's image (not physical but spritual image), and if mankind is filled with sin, then god must be the same way. Read Isaiah 45:7 -- god is all things.
Not only that, didn't god also create lucifer, the fallen angel? If god is all knowing, all powerful, etc., then why did god have to create lucifer in the first place and why didn't god know what would happen?
Here's a challenge to all you believers. If you didn't have the bible to fall back on (and remember, the bible is supposed to be god's words but they were written down by human beings) convince me there is really a god. Remember, no bible quotes. Just convince me there is a god.

We cannot possible know the mind of God, but we must trust in Him that He loves each of us and wants us to be happy with Him in eternity. Some bad things touch all of our lives and it seems that some grow much stronger in their faith because of it because they put all their hope and trust in God, and then others blame God for their troubles and separate from Him and this has been the way it's been since the beginning. We can use the bad things as a source of strength, or let it overcome us. We do have that choice to make. Are you happy your glass is half-full or bitter that its half-empty. Thats a life choice we all must make.

He gives us free will, even angels have free will (look at Satan)
our sin can hurt others, and we can also be hurt in return.
the world was a good place until we tried to be like God.
He wants us to choose him, above the world.even through bad things. also so he can separate the people who only believe in him when they are happy, from the true followers who believe him in any circumstance.rain or shine.and make us cry out for aid and comfort.
as for lightning and tsunamis...it's the end times, what do you expect...it will get worse.
It's punishment for the wicked and relief for the believers.
and stuff sucks but having Jesus with you helps you understand, and endure, through the hardships in life.

Because there is no god and it is time for citizens of humanity to open their eyes, to stop relying on a belief that does not exist. so many disasters have occured in all our lives because nobody halts to believe that there is no god. we find the strength within our own self and trigger it ourselves to do what is nescessary to deal with certain problems. If people would stop believing in gods, many lives can be saved, wars and violence wont happen as much over the cause of religion, and all nations can focus on one thing. Advancement in Technology.

That's probably the oldest question in the world. That and "Wait, where did I park the handcart? It was right here, I'm sure of it. What do you mean a tow away zone? Are you freakin' kidding me?!" Ecetera, ecetera.
Sure, maybe he's got a master plan. I'm open to the possibility. But I have to admit that answer, out of all of them, is the most open to mankind's fear of the unknown; it could just as easily be from us as a way to make sense of an ever non-sensical world. I've spoken about this at length with my brother. As I'm not religious and he's a priest, we thought of some possible answers. Of course, we'll never really know what's the score until we die. But here's a direction that many folks maybe haven't thought of. Just throwing this out there, see if it works for you.
Maybe its like the "Sim City" scenario. You know what its like...you're floating up above your urban utopia and simultaneously an earthquake hits, the polar icecaps melt and a godzilla ripoff starts getting cozy with that giant alabaster statue of you that you built. (Myself, I put statues of me -everywhere.- And I name all the streets after me, though it makes finding your post office a royal pain.) My point is, in the game you only have time to stop one of those three. Maybe its the same for him? Its a tough job. If we're asked to do too much in our jobs, this guy's hands down putting in the most unpaid overtime. Maybe it has nothing to do with allowing bad things to happen, he's just doing the best that he can. He's a good guy, from what I've heard.
Then there's those sticky gray questions. Not to be graphic here, that's not my intent, so let's say simply that a woman's in the hospital, about to give a dangerous birth. Only her or her child will live. If TV's any indication, this happens all the time. And there is no right answer to that one. Whatever you do, its the victim that's going to stand out. Maybe that's the way it should be. But still, folks are only going to focus on the negative aspects, because they're just that traumatic.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that if he really made us in his image, then maybe he's got human nature too. Like the guilt and regret that only comes from trying to help out everyone, and getting your three point shot blocked by sheer impossible odds. We've read about and seen a lot of heroes who rescue nine people out of a burning building but can't reach the tenth; and every hero I've ever seen just keeps blaming themselves for the last one. I don't think you can be a hero otherwise, as sad as it is.
Yeah, I know, I'm an atheist. But hear me out. It's totally all right to question, and maybe that questioning leads to a loss of faith, sure. But maybe he doesn't let bad things happen to good people. Maybe he (literally) moves mountains and does the very best he can. If it feels right to you after your struggle, maybe you'll come to think that he doesn't allow bad things to happen at all. Good luck, bro.

God have a reason for everything. do not question or judge what he does. for example, the Katrina hurricane whipped out a state and put under water and many people lost their lives, now would you think these people would have change after this horrific ordeal? no, you still have people trying to get over the system, by explorting money, stealing, robbery, etc..
People this is a wake up call.

God allows bad things to happen to good people because god wants us to experence everything. If god didn't make us feel, we would be robots say "I love you god! I love you god!" but god loves us more then that! He wants us to live a good and complet life and to experience every thing!! You shouldn't jugd god because he loves you and want you to live a full and good life!! Read the Bible for more info. becuase my fingers hurt now. lol!
