In the 14th century, a certain number of Swiss soldiers were already i n the service of the pope. The idea of forming a permanent body of swiss soldiers directly employed by the pope is attributed to pope julius II in 1506. 150 swiss soldiers were brought to Rome. The guards were reorganised by pius IX in 1914. Its members are chosen from the nobility of the papal state.
