Why can dogs understand us, but we can't speak dog?
Animals are very intelligent. They are telepathic by nature, as man would be if not discouraged. They practice it for millions of years, as well as body language, so that they did not develop a voice box like humans have, to articulate all the letters of the alphabet.
However, a friend told me that a dog he knew was trained to get the slippers for his master. The dog actually tried to say "slippers," then went to get them, and one could hear it relatively well.
Animals have feelings and express them, but not in words as humans, but in body language, sounds and action. When Kenya forbid to hunt, the attack incidents with wild animals went far down. What does this tell us? The animals are fully aware of who is harming them and they took action against it. When the killing of their family members stopped, they were much more peaceful toward humans.
We can all live in peace, without that anyone has to fear the other. Same is true for peoples, speaking the animal language of peace.
When we try to "speak dog," like dog body language, the dog understands. A dog rite is to place the neck of the higher ranked dog over the neck of the lower ranked one. Thus the hierarchy is established. A dog trainer recommended this to establish the rank between dog and a young child, since the dog seemed to feel he was higher ranked. It helped to tell the dog, belonging to the family for a longer time than the child, not to be too "bossy" with the little child.
So we can "speak dog," mainly by body language.

We can speak dog, if we take the time to learn the language. And dogs don't readily know what we say, until we teach it to them.

They don't really understand us- they can associate things we say with things they can do, just like we can tell an angry bark from a sad whine and so on. If you tried, you can put actions and barks together much like they can put your words to actions. Did that make sense?
