Even Jesus cried out on the cross, "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?"
These are the first words of the 22nd psalm, one of the lamentation psalms. But the psalm ends on a positive note with, "And I will live for the LORD."
Both Jews and Christians believe a long tradition in asking God why he lets bad things happen.
We try to understand things mentally, but we are also emotional beings and we feel things deeply.
God understands this. He created us this way.
With love in Christ.

The Pope is systematically and with deliberation discrediting the Bible for a variety of selfish motives. One is to fill Church Pews and Coffers. The Roman Catholic Churches are losing patrons to Islam - and soon will do a round about and align with Islam.
The Bible prophesied this (if one knows what to look for) but non the less, the proof will be in the pudding - i.e., when he does exactly that. He will turn to an alliance and merging of faith and will be the false prophet to Islam's awaited Mahdi (actually THE Antichrist.

No, he asked this because in the midst of the atrocities of WWII, he wondered where he was while all that was going on. Why did God allow these things to happen? The Pope is a person like the rest of us. He can be amazed at the evil that goes on and wonder why God allows it too.
