and I didn't say anythign about Christianity. Alluding to the Bible being violent does not answer my question.

Because you obviously know nothing about Islam and so alot of western people ... i will answer your question ...

1- About the killing and so Issue:

At the time of the beginning of Islam ... where Muslims were about 300 hundreds or so ... Kuffar (those who worship Idols "Statues of their made") ... used to hurt Muslims and fight them and make wars with Muslims ...

Muslims was afraid as they were so few against thousands of Kuffar ... so Allah sent down his verses to encourage Muslims to stand in front of Kuffar ... not to destroy the Islam in its cradle ...

because if these 300 hundreds were defeated ... there wouldn't have been any Muslims left ...

so ... mainly, these verses is for the war times of 14 century ago ... and unbelievers is meant for Kuffar(those who worship idols) ... not Christians and Jewish ..

and about Cristians ... Allah says in Quran:
2:62
"Verily! Those who believe and those who are Jews and Christians, and Sabians, whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day and do righteous good deeds shall have their reward with their Lord, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve"

5:82
"Verily, you will find the strongest among men in enmity to the believers (Muslims) the Jews and those who are polytheists, and you will find the nearest in love to the believers (Muslims) those who say: "We are Christians." That is because amongst them are priests and monks, and they are not proud"

so ... Cristians and Jewish are mentioned in Quran as Cristians and Jewish or as "people of the scripture". . not Non-Beleivers or unbeleivers ... or whatever ...

2-About the Jizzyah Issue:

the verse from the Quran is -- teh one you mentioned is not totally right :
"Fight against those who (1) believe not in Allah, (2) nor in the Last Day, (3) nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger (4) and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth (i.e. Islam) among the People of the Scripture, until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued"

when the islamic state was established ... it faced alot of dangers .. because of other states wanted to fight Muslims as they were getting larger and greater ... so fighting for the Muslim state was the duty of Muslim men only ..

so Cristians and Jewish who lived with Muslims in the state of Islam was not required to fight or go to war ... but instead they pay money so Muslims can make an army able to fight those who fights Muslims ... that's it .. and i think it's fair ...

i mean you live secured with Muslims and they defend your existance and you will not participate in that war ... and also you don't want to help them defend you ..????!!!

No religion of the world preaches violent.

and islam is the religion of peace.
Islam preaches the message of Allah. which is

You are only picking out those that fit your argument.

Had you ever read the Quran in completion, you would not ask such a silly question.

First of all, you should question jihad not Islam. Millions of Muslims in the world and select few choose to kill and terrorize in the name of Allah.

Secondly, western perception influenced by the Christian Crusades has many believing that jihad is an Islamic war against unbelievers and that is simply not true.

Jihad be definition is the inner struggle of moral discipline and commitment to Islam. It is the struggle of a mulim to become a better human being, improving himself and community.

These radicals represent noone but themselves. They don't represent true Islam. They have their own distorted definition and echo none of the leading Islamicist trends.

Very few Muslims, as with Christians take the sacred scripture literally word for word.

I understand you have an agenda here but all religious sceptics have an agenda.

I would advise you to do more research of Arabs, and the religion of Islam as well as the different sects of the religion.

Aside from learning much that I can assure you many don't know, it would prevent you from asking such questions.
