My brother and his gf had a baby almost 3 weeks ago, the most adorable litle girl. On Sunday night at like 10:PM my bro's gf called my Uncle Tom over to see the baby. Tom is a loud stupid bumbling drunken idiot that didn't make it past the 6th grade. He went over to their apartment and brought Mikeys, Heineken, Corona and 4 bottles of champagne with him. I don't know why my bro and his gf drank all that, but they got plastered and neglected their baby. I wasn't there, I just heard about it after the fact. They feel horrible about drinking with my uncle and they love thier baby so much, but why did they do that??? I want to kill my moron uncle! They said they wouldn't drink again, but I don't know.

Why did they do that? Why questions are always impossible to answer. The best you ever get is just quesswork, but here is my guess or at least something to consider:
The most disruptive event in anyone's life is the birth of a child. The first time it happens is more than a minor thing. Relationships change, schedules are thrown out of whack and even the most loving parents find that nothing has prepared them for what just took place. This puts a great deal of stress on the new parents.
If your brother's girlfriend called dear old Uncle Tom at 10 pm she probably had some idea that he would come to celebrate. That he would bring some refreshment with him was probably no surprise. That they got so plastered so quickly probably was. They just may have been through the roughest 3 weeks of their lives.
If you care about them and your new niece, this is what you might do. Learn what you need to know to "baby sit" your niece for an overnighter to give the couple time alone. I suggest that you schedule this close to the 5 or 6 weeks OB checkup that will clear the way for the couple to have sex again. They need this for bonding and the experience with the infant will teach you very much about what is going on in their lives.

They're new parents and probably didn't realize what they were getting themselves into with Drunken Uncle until it was too late and they were already buzzed.
The fact that they feel horrible should reassure you that this unfortunate set of events is unlikely to happen again.
