I heartily agree with the previous Windows 2000 answer. The day I am forced to "upgrade" to XP is the day I will reformat my hard drive for Linux, or go buy a Mac.
Any software that absolutely requires XP is a sign of bloating. I've got plenty of high-end programs that run just fine on Win2000. What might be more of an issue is memory, not just how much, but what type. And to a lesser extent, hard drive space, and how your disk cashe and swap file are configured.

Hmmm... The tail that wags the dog - upgrading an entire operating system because of an insignificant application. Did you just upgrade your version of MSN Messenger? I'd say keep Windows 2000 and revert to the previous version of MSN Messenger. It is not worth the upgrade just because of Messenger.
If you are 100% sure you want to upgrade to XP, you'll have to pay for it. I am not aware of any XP freebies out there.

It might be easier to get an older version of MSN Messenger that will work with your 2000 here:
http://www.oldapps.com/msn_messenger.htm
Or just use your built-in Windows Messenger, it works fine on the MSN network.

You have to pay unless you do something illegal. Illegal things to do are if you know someone who has it copy it to another disk, or get limewire and search programs to get windows xp. But I had windows 98 and was running messenger so I dont see why it wouldnt work on 2000

1. you can't get xp free without stealing it
2. you can't upgrade win 2000, you have to format and lose everything
suggest you stick to a lower version of MSN

You really can't do it. I know some are making fun of your question but the bottom line is you can't get a free legal copy of XP.
