"Non-religious" people come in at about fourteen percent, and maybe higher, since not all religious people attend church for religious reasons.
And, of course, since they are a hated minority, some will lie to pollsters about their atheism or agnosticism.

I get about 8%. In any case, I'm not surprised by the numbers. That kind of approach to life (generally) requires great intellectual independence, which is not a commodity that's easy to come by. They pit themselves against family, peers, vast numbers of "authority" figures and their own very human fears. But think of it this way; What percentage of the population are scientists, or even more generally, intellectuals?

80% of people live in the Third World, where religion is almost mandatory. Of the other 20%, most people would describe themselves as "vaguely Christian", meaning that they went to Church as a kid, but don't bother now. In Spain, for example, about 90% of people call themselves Catholic, but only around 15% actually go to Church.

Humans are animals just like all other animals, and as such, are frightened into hysteria by the unknown. Think of herd animals stampeding.
Humans invent Gods to explain the unknown to help prevent them from stampeding over cliffs when lightning strikes or thunder claps. Humans invent Gods for self-preservation.
The number of "believers" is equal to the number of terrified sheep masquerading as animals with superior intellects.
Scary that they are on the verge of stampeding at any given time. ..

Because very few people don`t believe in God.Even when they claim they don`t ,most of the time its not true.I see a lot of angry questions about God,why is there so much anger? If people truly are atheists then why do they care if someone else believes differently?

I am an Atheist. I don't know many other people who think religion is mythology. I think a lot of people doubt the validity of their faith, but are afraid to say so.

There is no light in atheism, the "light" is Jesus Christ.
