A companion dog is not necessarily of a specific breed, but rather one that is trained on your needs.

The blind community does have a lot of companion and guide dogs and some are Labradors, Golden Retrievers, or even German Shephards.

You can have your own companion dog trained to fit your needs and then get the dog certified as a companion dog---this procedure varies from state to state.

The most important factor in having such a dog is that you and the dog get along, like each other, and tune in to each other, otherwise it will not work.

Unlike guide dogs, you will not be able to take your companion dog everywhere even though the dog is a certified companion--that also varies from state to state.

You need to pick a breed that likes the same activities you like, it will make it better for both.

For example, and older guy that likes to be quiet at home watching TV should not get a Dalmatian.

The website below has quiz and multiple classes to define what breeds are appropriate for different activities.

Many dogs make great companions. I want to get an Australian Sheppard. They arent very big but they arent feminine little dogs, they like the outdoors, and they are really playful.

Need more info - apartment or house with a yard? Are you lazy or do you like to go running? How much time and $ do you want to spend grooming, training and exercising? You should pick a dog based on how its temperament fits into your lifestyle, no just on how it looks. Post again and I'll try to help you.

I think a manly type of dog is a doberman pinscher, or if you like a smaller dog, a miniature pinscher which is like the doberman only smaller.

well I would have to say a Boxer because they can be taken anywhere and they are very forgiving. A boxer will adjust to anything and they do well with others.
