I don't get it either. Both are a choice. Except on the rare occasions when someone has an extreme metabolism problem. Overweight people drive up healthcare as much as the smokers!!! Yet I get the extra big tax on my cigs now. Where's the fast food tax? We need a $2.50 tax on the Big Mac.

Think about this: In highschool, if you're overweight, you'll get picked on and teased, right? If you smoke in highschool, everyone will think you're cool, right. There you go. It's a case involving your emotions. What I don't like is this: If people who are overweight are being teased and losing opportunities because of it, they should FIX THE PROBLEM! They can always make an effort to go on a diet or exercise more, or even invest in a weight-loss program. Smokers aren't looked down on by society, while overweight people sometimes are. That's exactly why.

Smoking is in fact a big issue. Some citys have banned smoking from all public places. Some large company's will not employ smokers and even some insurance companys will not insure smokers.

I agree with Johnny. Being overweight is a negative thing for the sufferer, not the people around him/her. It's embarassing and destroys their self-esteem.
But smokers likely started because their peers thought it was cool, or it at least wasn't as frowned upon as it is now. And smokers' second-hand smoke is not only annoying, it's deadly.
The good thing is that the tide seems to be turning with both conditions: obesity and cigarette addiction. TV ads are encouraging active, healthy lifestyles and encouraging smokers to quit.
But all that considered, I still think it's rude to make faces at smokers. If the smoke is bothersome, it's appropriate to ask the person nicely to put it out or move farther away.

"no one has ever been bothered because a fat person ate next to them in a restaurant. the opposite can be said about smoking."
Because fat people are never stinky. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
Never mind the fact that if you are uptight enough to complain about smokers, then I'm sure you've dissed someone for being fat.

Because smoking is clearly a choice. Smoking is not something one must do in moderation to live. People must eat to live. There is a balance where one maintains weight. Some illnesses and genetic issues cause people to be heavier than "optimal". Losing weight is by far more difficult than quiting smoking. Over half the people in the US are over weight, less than 20% smoke. Being overweight does not cause sickness or illness to any other person, smoking does.

Overweight people have more than an issue to escape from stresses via eating unlike the smoking counterpart in your discussion. Both can kill u but in a period of American history smoking was glamorized to be cool, sexy and mysterious - over-weightiness has never been glamorized and maybe rightly so. Smokers are not called "lardo", "thunder thighs" and so forth and not put on public display as being out-of-control with their eating habits or lazy or can't push away from the table. Although smoking can start from an emotional upset however over-weightiness can come from an emotional upset and from a physical malfunction. Smoking is an acceptable killer, like alcohol or pot, being over-weight in some people eyes is worse than being on cocaine.

Good, if badly worded point. Fat people are just as offensive to average sized people as smokers are I am sure. I, personally, would be equally grossed out to have to sit next to some ****** sucking on a stinking cigar, as I would be having a heifer sized lard butt squeezed into a seat next to me. I actually would rather the smoker, at least you can fan the smoke away. But they are banned already from the type of places that should also have size maximums. Movie theaters and airplanes come to mind.

I don't get that either.
I guess being next to a smoking person can harm you while being next to a fat person just makes you look better. ;)
I don't like is when average size women (well actually below average in the US) are called overwieght when they are not.
TOO FAT is not OK. TOO SKINNY is not OK.

Hmmm...philosophical today, yeah?
I live with a smoker and it drives me nuts (I don't smoke), but I've also lived with someone who was hurting themself with overeating (unfortunately I under eat when stressed), and also lived with someone who was hurting themself with alcohol consumption (no comment on that as far as I'm concerned!).
But I would disagree about smoking because in our state you can't even smoke in a bar and when people go out the non-smokers are disgusted.
