I would much rather prefer to be witty, rather than funny.
The rewards of being funny are more immediate, granted, but the moment you leave the room, most people will forget the funny joke you've said.
If you say something witty, it is far more likely that people will remember and think about the witty comment you made long after you've left the room. Witty comments are more thought-provoking than funny jokes, because jokes have a conclusion to them. Thus, the gratification is instant, albeit brief. A witty comment does not always have a conclusion and will last in people's minds longer.
Unfortunately, being witty takes actual skill, since it cannot be achieved by simply memorizing a funny line or anecdote. Being witty takes practice and it takes a little bit of acting. Witty comments also have the potential to go right over a person's head leaving them confused, rather than thoughtful.

Witty. If you are witty you can have add an edge of intelligence to your actions. More than just being silly to make people laugh.

Witty, what happy_hammer said, but also wit is not always even funny. It can be hurtful as well, so it's really a double-sided sword, use it well... ;]
