Clean them with 50/50 rubbing alcohol and white vinegar, get a squeeze bottle with a long tip (I get them from a beauty supply store) then clean them twice a day till they clear up then use it weekly to keep them nice and clean and free from infection...works well...I have a golden retriever with lots of problems with his ears and after spending big buxx at the vet I found this out and it does the trick...good luck. :)

blue powder ear wash
Note: The originator of this recipe is unknown. At this point it is a widely cited "folk remedy" which is highly effective in treating ear infections.
1 16 oz bottle of rubbing alcohol (pour off an inch to make some room)
8 to 16 drops Gentian violet (it's real cheap, but hard to find - try next to the Iodine at a Mom & Pop Pharmacy or ask someone to order it)
4 Tbs. Boric Acid Powder (also cheap and found at the pharmacy)
Shake well and for convenience transfer some to a small (4 ounce) "spout" bottle. Each time you use it, shake the bottle well to make sure the powder is in suspension.
The Gentian Violet will stain, so be careful where you mix it and where you apply it to the dog's ears.
If you're treating an infection, you want to clean the ears with this mixture on a daily basis. Otherwise from once a week to once a month is usually enough to keep the ears healthy.

b.w. had an excellent answer - a little long, but worth the read - good job.
A couple additional points to consider:
1. Are you sure it is an ear infection? It could be many things that appear like an infection - only your vet can diagnose.
2. If your dog's ear drum becomes perforated you have just turned a $50 vet visit into a $250 visit.
3. Chlorhexidine should never be used in the ears for reason #2. If it gets into the inner ear it can cause permanent hearing loss.
Home remedies for pets are really not a good idea. In the long run they will cost you more than quality vet care.
And remember: It is better to be a smarta$$ than a dumba$$.
Good Luck.

I don't know about home remedies, but I would recommend taking your dog to the vet. The sooner you start antibiotics, the sooner the agony will be over.
But for a home preventative, buy the ear cleaner fluid that they sell at pet stores. Some people put it on cotton swabs and swab out all the nooks and crannies in the dog's ear they can see, but some vets would warn against that. It's hard to get to a dog's ear drum, but better safe than sorry. My vet says to squirt the fluid into the dog's ear until it's full, then hold the ear closed and rub for a few seconds (you'll hear a squishy sound), then back up and let the dog shake it out. Repeat regularly, perhaps before each bath.

I don't know of any home remedies. The best thing to probably do is take your dog to the vet. You may be able to find canine ear drops at the local pet store, too.

If there is a lot of debris in the dogs ears then mix a little vinegar and rubbing alcohol together and dip a cotton ball in it and clean out the dogs ears. It probably should see a vet though.

I found this website that has vet reccomended ideas. Scroll down, and you will see many ideas. I found the vinegar idea to be surprising, but if it works, do it. Good luck and hope it helps.

antibiotics, which you get from a vet. if your kid had an ear infection, you'd take him/her to a doctor, right? your responsibility is the same for your dog.
